Let’s Chat: Depression

Over 280- 322 million people worldwide suffer from depression, almost five percent of all adults. Depression isn’t just “feeling down,” though; it’s the persistent, deep sadness that can last for years. It can affect work, school, and personal life, but it’s not a weakness; it’s actually very common.

Some of the main symptoms of depression are loss of interest in the things that usually make you happy, feeling empty or upset, low energy, trouble concentrating, and even thoughts of death. However, it can look different from person to person.

There are a few different types of depression.

  • Major Depressive Disorder (or MDD) is the most common form, and features most of the symptoms above for time periods of two weeks or more.
  • Persistent Depressive Disorder is a long-lasting, low-level depression that lasts for years at a time. Depression can also be a side effect of other mental illnesses, like Bipolar.
  • Another very common form of depression is seasonal affective disorder, or seasonal depression, which is usually linked to the longer nights of winter.

Living with depression can make it hard to stay connected, keep a routine, or feel motivated day to day. At AIM Center, the Clubhouse model offers a community where people can build relationships, find purpose, and know they’re not facing those challenges alone.

Through meaningful work, peer support, shared experiences, and a welcoming community, Clubhouses help individuals living with mental illness reconnect with others and work toward recovery at their own pace.
